 How does DHA work and what is it?

DHA is derived from plants, such as sugar beet and sugar cane. It is an active ingredient in sunless, self-tanning lotions. DHA darkens the skin cells in the epidermis (the outer most layer of the skin), producing a bronze colour within a few hours. DHA is a safe skin colouring agent and nutritional supplement that has been used in products for many years.

DHA based products

The most effective products available are sunless fake tanning or fake self tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. The fake tan is not a dye or stain, but a reaction between the DHA and the amino acids in the dead layer on the surface of the skin. This is similar to a reaction called the Maillard reaction. It does not involve skin pigmentation and it does not require sunbed, UV exposure to make the colour change. The fake tan is temporary and will fade gradually over 7 to10 days. Some fake tanning products use Erythrulose combined with the DHA. Erythrulose works identically to DHA on the surface of the skin but develops a little more slowly. The two chemicals used together can produce a longer lasting sunless tan.

Dihydroxyacetone or Erythrulose may cause contact dermatitis. First time users of sunless tanning products should apply them to a small patch of skin and wait for a full day before a full body application. It is very rare that fake tan products will cause a reaction but it's better safe than sorry.

Best results are reviewed when applied to clean, dry skin the day after a full body exfoliation. You should avoid taking a bath, shower or a swim until product is has completely absorbed into the skin after a minimum of 4 hours.

DHA has been approved for cosmetic use as It is considered nontoxic and non carcinogenic. Because DHA does not use the skin's melanocytes to make the skin a tan colour it is recommended as a cosmetic disguise for Vitiligo patients.

Tyrosine based products

There are other types of products IE;. Tan accelerators, lotions and pill that usually contain the amino acid tyrosine, claim that they stimulate and increase melanin formation, thereby speeding up the tanning process. These are designed for use in conjunction with Sun Beds and booths. At this time, there is no scientific data available to support these claims.

Canthaxanthin based products (Tanning Pills)

Another sunless tanning product is a pill that contains canthaxanthin. Although approved by the FDA for use of canthaxanthin in food, it is not approved as a tanning agent.

When used as a colour additive, only very small amounts of canthaxanthin are needed. As a tanning agent much larger quantities are needed. After canthaxanthin is consumed, it is deposited throughout the body, including in the layer of fat below the skin, which turns an orange-brown colour.

These types of tanning pills have been linked to side effects, including hepatitis and canthaxanthin retinopathy, a condition in which yellow deposits form in the retina of the eye. Side effects including damage to the skin surface have also been noted.

The rules on how to tan safely are very simple. Wear high factor sunscreen over your fake tan. This is the only way to avoid sunburn whilst maintaing a healthy (false) tan.
